Recent Projects: Meal Planner

I’ve recently been doing a lot with Excel, which is not something I’ve previously worked with much.  So, in order to familiarize myself with it, I decided to take on a personal project.  Lately I’ve been trying to organize my home life, and I decided to apply Excel to creating something to help me.  I decided to try to make the perfect meal planner.

I started by finding templates that appealed to me, and I settled on a free download from Microsoft.  At some point the macros had been removed from the workbook, so it was really only a shell with extremely limited functionality.  This was great for my purposes, so I decided to expand on it.  I added more tabs and functions and kept it all live so I didn’t have to use macros to activate anything.

This is the result: this Weekly Meal Planner.  I put so much work into it that I feel like it’s wasted if I don’t share it with other people who might find it useful.  Feel free to change it any way you want, but be aware that the background calculations aren’t all labeled – I was only doing this for personal use.  I added an instructions page to explain some of the logic behind its use, but modifying it will still probably be a pain. There are a few areas that I find a bit clunky and could probably be improved, but overall I’m pretty happy with it.

If you decide to use it and you find something that doesn’t work the way it should, just let me know and I’ll do what I can to fix it.

  1. I did find an error on the shopping tab. If quantities and units aren’t showing up correctly in the produce table, you can fix it:

Unlock the shopping sheet by right-clicking the tab and choosing unlock, then entering the password “letmein”.

Click the first cell under Qty in the produce table.
In the formula bar, find $S:$S and replace it with $F:$F.

Make the same change to the formula in the first cell under Unit in the Produce table.

    Re-lock the sheet (optional).
    Save.

I’ll try to get a corrected version up tonight so you don’t have to fix it manually.
